Title. Zakat
Lede. Your zakat, given in Mudgee, used in line with traditional rulings, with full transparency.
What zakat is
Zakat is the obligatory annual charity that Muslims pay on qualifying wealth held for a full lunar year. It is one of the five pillars of Islam, and the Quran describes it as a right of the poor in the wealth of the rich.
The standard rate is 2.5% of qualifying wealth above the nisab threshold. The nisab tracks the gold and silver markets; we publish the current figure below.
How MICC handles zakat
We collect zakat through a separate fund. Money in the zakat fund is never mixed with the build fund or with general donations. We use it only for purposes that scholars consider zakat-eligible: helping the poor and needy, debt relief, traveller support, and the operations of those who collect and distribute it.
In practice, most zakat we collect goes to:
- Welfare support for Mudgee Muslim families in hardship.
- Halal grocery vouchers during Ramadan.
- School costs for children whose families cannot meet uniform, books, and excursion fees.
- Funeral costs for community members.
We do not use zakat for the building, for utilities, for staff who are not collecting and distributing zakat, or for any purpose that scholars consider zakat-ineligible.

A few common questions
Is my zakat tax-deductible in Australia?
The same rules apply as for any other gift to a registered charity. Once our DGR status is confirmed, donations of $2 or more are tax-deductible. Zakat itself remains a religious obligation regardless of tax status.
Can I direct my zakat to a specific family?
Sometimes, with care. The zakat fund must go to zakat-eligible recipients, so we cannot accept directed zakat for someone the rulings do not cover. Please email hello@micc.org.au with a specific situation in mind.
Do you give zakat overseas?
Our priority is the Mudgee region. We sometimes partner with established Australian charities that distribute zakat overseas to verified recipients in countries facing crisis. We do not send zakat overseas independently.
